Check out the progress of our Cole Academy East building!

Attention New Parents

Cole Academy East is a new neighborhood school in East Lansing’s Northern Tier. The original Cole Academy has been operating in Lansing for over 40 years.  This brand new building will open in the Fall of 2018, initially serving grades K-2.  Cole Academy East will be adding a grade each year (3rd grade in 2019, 4th grade in 2020, etc.), eventually serving students grades K-8, in the year 2023.  This is a gradual growth model with our students that will allow us to sustain development with home-grown, diverse students, immersed in our culture of high expectations for academics and behavior.  It should be noted that our expectations for our students are also the same of our staff and administrators.  Cole Academy has always maintained a core value of respect.  It is a non-negotiable trait and can be found throughout the district in our kids, our parents, our teachers and administrators, support staff, and anyone who enters the building.

Most students will begin Cole Academy East in our 3 kindergarten classes, with a twenty-student (20) maximum class size. Each kindergarten will also have a certified classroom teacher, a reading interventionist (specifically addressing kindergarten needs), and a full-time paraprofessional.  That is a 10:1 student to adult ratio in each class and a 7:1 ratio when the interventionist in the classroom.  All early childhood research indicates that kindergarten students thrive in smaller class sizes!  First and Second grades will have a 15:1 student to adult ratio.

As in our original school, we will continue to provide the highest quality learning environment in East Lansing, by delivering developmentally appropriate instruction for individual students.  We utilize authentic workshops in reading, writing, and mathematics, refilled “kits” for hands-on science, and a local-to-global connection for social studies.  Our teachers are trained in these unique, content-connected, learning philosophies.  It can be demonstrated that our current staff in Lansing are the best-trained in Ingham County and our new staff at Cole Academy East will match those expectations.

In addition we will always have physical education, the fine arts, technology devices for each student, and on-site, before school and aftercare programs.

We challenge parents to do their homework!  We are a neighborhood school that guarantees an unparalleled, high-quality educational experience for your children. Please, ask around, or come visit and we’ll make a believer out of you!
